The verses for this came in high school, the old "unreachable girl who's going out with a jerk" type of thing. I had another chorus that never quite worked, and I found myself dreading to reach it, instead playing the verses over and over. So I shelved it indefinitely.
Then in 2004, at age 33, I wanted to play it with the TDow Band that we had just formed, and really had to finish it. The energetic nature of that group and of having bass and drums very much influenced the "pop" feel of the eventual chorus. Plus I thought the last line of the chorus summed up the whole thing pretty nicely.
Lyrics:
There’s almost nothing that he wouldn’t do
There’s almost no one else but you
You’re almost everything he needs
But I’d give next to anything for you to notice me
He’s wrong for you, you told me so
But it’s tough to change the life you’ve known
And it hurts you when you’re left alone
It’s almost enough for you to let him go
Sooner or later I gotta get it through to you
Sooner or later and it’s gotta be, gotta be…
Chorus:
Soon you’re gonna open up your eyes
'Bout time you convinced your mind what your heart already knows
Soon you’re gonna look my way and realize
What this love’s for...you deserve much more than almost
But you’ll promise him that you’ll wait ‘til Saturday
When you’ll have almost all of his time
I spend each and every day
Wishing you, wishing you were almost mine
Sooner or later I’ve gotta get it through to you
Sooner or later and it’s gotta be, gotta be…
Repeat Chorus
